X-PERT Diabetes Digital Programme

By Helen Knight, X-PERT Health Training and Education Added 9th Mar, 2021 Updated 18th Mar, 2021

After 15 years of delivering our award-winning X-PERT Health group education, we have created something truly innovative.

Our diabetes digital platform, available on smart phones, tablets and computers, includes all six sessions from our diabetes education.

It enables users to understand more about their diabetes using visually engaging content delivered through animated videos, quizzes, games and interactive goal setting. It also includes inbuilt tracking functions and access to a user forum. Users are supported to set realistic and achievable goals, and have access to help from a trained health coach.

About

The problem: 4.7M UK people have diabetes, and 12.3M more are at risk. The solution: evidence from systematic reviews shows that structured education leads to improvements in glycaemic control and patient wellbeing. The challenge: Take-up of group-based education is poor, at 11%. The Innovation: A QISMET-certified digital programme, accessible to users in their own home (or care home) via a mobile phone/tablet/laptop. This package of engaging education is currently being adapted to 14 additional languages too. Evidence base and cost savings: NHS England state that structured education could deliver savings of £93 per person (5 years)/£129 (10 years). The RCT of X-PERT Diabetes (Deakin et al. 2006) demonstrated an average HbA1c reduction of 0.6% (7mmol/mol) along with clinically significant weight loss, reduced CVD risk, and a reduced requirement for prescribed medication. This equated to an average saving of ~£100 per patient, findings backed by an independent cost-effectiveness analysis (Jacobs-van der Bruggen et al, 2009).  Implementation: We make it simple. All you need to do is purchase an annual licence (£0.002 per head of population); purchase the required number of logins (£84-£99/user); complete the necessary agreements; refer patients. We do the rest, and provide regular implementation reports!
