PneuX Pneumonia Prevention System
About
TIER 2 APPROVED
The PneuX™ Pneumonia Prevention System prevents hospital-acquired pneumonia by using a tracheal tube with a highly engineered silicone cuff and tracheal seal monitor (TSM) preventing leakage into the lungs.
And uniquely, the airway above the cuff can be irrigated with high volumes of saline to render bacterial counts negligible.
Pneumonia is the leading cause of nosocomial mortality in ICU resulting in tens of thousands of avoidable deaths and increasing ICU stay with an estimated cost of £60m per year for the NHS. Bacteria contaminated fluid continuously drips into lungs past all standard tube cuffs causing pneumonia. Studies have shown the PneuX™ System prevents any leakage to the lungs.
Developed by Dr Peter Young at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn; studies at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and University of Cardiff have seen thePneuX™ System stops leakage 24/7. An independent NHS study by the Heart and Lung Centre, Wolverhampton and the Royal College of Surgeons in 2016 showed significant reductions in hospital-acquired-pneumonia using the PneuX™ System and a saving of £700 per PneuX™ System tube used.
Selected for the NHS Innovation Accelerator, the PneuX™ System is currently being rolled out across the NHS.
