Healthwatch Lancashire, a public voice on health and social care in the county, has created care home guidance which is being rolled out across Lancashire following detailed evaluation of more than 40 local care homes.

Since 2015, Healthwatch Lancashire’s Care Home Sector’s ‘Enter & View’ programme has supported service improvement in care homes and in methods of sharing intelligence with local NHS and Adult Social Care teams.

Supported by Innovation Agency funding, Healthwatch Lancashire worked with service providers and stakeholders during a six month period to produce the guidance. ‘Choosing a Care Home: ‘The ‘Mum’s Test’ Checklist’ assists those searching for suitable nursing homes or residential care. ‘The Mum’s Test: Good Practice Observations form Lancashire’s Residential Care & Nursing Home Sector’ highlights areas for consideration by potential residents and assists managers or owners in comparing services, thus leading to further improvement. The guides include CQC/inspection reports, staff response to queries, accommodation, public areas, staff behaviour, compassion, care, food/nutrition, activities and wellbeing of residents.

The guides are available from the Healthwatch Lancashire website.

Healthwatch Lancashire aims to expand the programme to the domiciliary care sector during 2017/18.
