Safe Steps - preventing falls, improving lives

By James Chapman, Safe Steps Added 25th Feb, 2019 Updated 3rd Jun, 2020

Safe Steps is a digital falls risk assessment tool, designed to reduce the number of falls in care homes.

Safe Steps uses a dynamic set of assessment questions to create individual, personalised care plans. Co-created with care professionals, Safe Steps provides a consistent way for care organisations to implement a falls prevention strategy and adhere to Care Quality Commission (CQC) regulatory requirements.

Currently under evaluation by Wirral, Bolton and Tameside CCGs.

About

It is estimated that 35% of the over 65 population will fall each year. Of those, 43% will fall twice or more, and of those, 33% will attend A&E or a minor injuries unit. Falls trigger over 40% of admissions into nursing and residential care and are the most common reason for referrals to intermediate care. The average cost of dealing with a serious fall is £7.5k (PHE), costing the NHS approximately £2.3 billion every year (NICE, 2015).

Safe Steps is a secure digital risk assessment tool - built to NHS Digital standards - which provides a standardised and effective approach to falls risk management.

It has been designed and co-created with health and social care professionals to reduce the incidence of falls across health & care settings by adopting a range of risk assessment factors to provide frontline staff with the tools to efficiently determine the likelihood that a particular resident will fall.

Assessing 12 key areas - based on NICE guidelines - and providing CQC approved recommendations for multifactorial intervention via a secure, easy-to-use web application.

Safe Steps is currently live in 100+ care homes across Greater Manchester and Merseyside and is being evaluated with the help of Innovation Agency, Health Innovation Manchester, Wirral CCG, Bolton CCG and Tameside CCG. It therefore offers a ‘ready to go’ solution for other care homes across the UK.

We provide full training and support for deployment and onboarding, together with ongoing reporting and outcomes evaluation.
