As part of the Small Business Research Initiative supported by the Innovation Agency (North West Coast AHSN), Rinicare is developing SAFE (System to Avoid Fall Events) with the University of Manchester and University Hospital of South Manchester.

SAFE combines thermal imaging sensors and bespoke algorithms to detect changes in a patient’s position in a hospital-style bed. Messages then alert clinicians to take action to prevent a fall.

A third of people aged 65+ and 50% of people over 80 fall at least once a year. Falls are the most common cause of death from injury in the 65+s costing the NHS more than £2bn a year and four million hospital bed days. Falls are the primary factor for a person losing independence and going into long term care. The SAFE system will be suitable for both hospital and community care.

Rinicare will be fully supported and funded to demonstrate the technical feasibility of their proposed concept for a six-month developmental stage during 2016. If found to offer value and technical feasibility, the SAFE system will be supported through to commercialisation.
