A&E app to reduce waiting times

About

TIER 2 APPROVED

An application managing A&E services using real time data, used by Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust since September 2014, has helped reduce the average total length of stay from 160 minutes (April 2014) to 130 minutes (February 2015).

Providing A&E staff with real-time data on attendances in emergency departments, it predicts demand daily/hourly enabling Trusts to identify peaks and troughs in the department.

The dashboard developed from printing out A&E data from Excel and posting the sheets of paper around A&E to help people understand what causes pressure in the department. A team of doctors, nurses, management and other staff then developed the tool with the business intelligence team.

A partnership with NHS Shared Business Services – a joint venture between the Department of Health and technology firm Sopra Steria – has resulted in a system using analysis of historical data and complex algorithms to predict the most likely scenarios. In September, the partners launched HealthIntell, a suite of data reporting tools for A&E, procurement and finance.
